Chinese president's India visit: Why one should believe that Sino-Indian relationship would touch new dimension!
With Chinese Premier Xi Jinping arriving at Ahmadabad and signing three MOU's, debates have already started whether Sino-Indian relationship would touch a new dimension as claimed earlier by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

History says that despite proactive efforts by late Rajiv Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Sino-Indian relations were never better other than some extended trade relations that was heavily tilted towards China.

Even when MoUs were being signed in the presence of Xi Jinping at Ahmadabad, the news of failure of flag meeting on Chinese incursion at Demchak, Ladakh came. Naturally the question arises whether this visit of Xi, for which Narendra Modi even broke protocol to receive him at Ahmadabad, would really bring a difference or it would be just a formality! Questions are also being raised as XI Jinping came to India after visiting Male and Sri Lanka.

Before answering this and understanding Modi's strategy, let me briefly underline some facts regarding the Chinese premier and China's policy. Xi Jinping is the second most powerful leader in China. He is said to be very open on economic relations but equally closed on political issues. His policy is to make China a developed, influential and muscular country.

Many say that there is a good chemistry between him and Modi even before Modi was prime minister. In international polity chemistry between top leaders although is an advantage but the national interest is always a priorit for the top leaders. China already had a presence in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Male apart from his closeness to its all weather friend Pakistan, arch rival of India. That's why doubts are raised despite China's proposal of $100 billion dollar investment proposal. Even analysts question this investment, particularly from security point of view.

But let's study the strategy by Narendra Modi! He might be new in diplomatic world but I think his strategists are very smart. Earlier whenever border incursions occurred, South Block used to be very soft and agreeing to China's various conditions for retreat. But under Modi's leadership, India not only mobilized more forces, and infrastructure at the border ares to counter Chinese aggression but there were also some confrontations between the two armies.

In latest incident, Indian army simply dismantled the new road laid by Chinese army. In North East, India is planning to deploy Aakash Missiles as a counter measure. The clear message to China is that India wouldn't be tolerating any violation at LAC. The ongoing incursion is made by Chinese civilians although PLA is behind it.

Next, Indian PM first visited Bhutan, then Nepal and finally went to Japan. When Chinese Premier is in India, Indian President is already in Vietnam signing bilateral agreements particularly on supply of weapons to Vietnam and exploring oil in South China Sea. Before that Australian PM came to India and assured for cooperation on civil nuclear program!

Interestingly all these nations are neighbor to China also and not in good terms with China! The clear message to China is that India wants a relation at equal footing. If China starts playing, India too can play! That's why Modi's body language was very confident while receiving Xi Jinping.

China very well knew the strategy by Modi government particularly when the Indian government intentionally wanted that China should make a note of it. Now question is, if Xi Jinping is for a muscular China, then why he is ready to negotiate with India.

Chinese president although has the vision of building a muscular China, but he is not ignorant of the ground realities. India has the neighbors (except Pakistan) who always look at India for security and cooperation. It's when India neglects them or ignores them, they usually try to befriend China although they always suspect China's muscular diplomacy.

Once India intends to stand for them, they would snap all ties with those nations that have no good relations with India. That's why Modi's SAARC policy is very successful and attractive. On the other hand China's neighbors don't seek security from China. Rather they seek outside support to get rid of Chinese domination. South Korea and Japan seek support of America where as Vietnam, Myanmar are looking at India!

Further Modi is slated to visit USA later this year. There is every chance that USA and India can be strategic partners as both are democracies. Now if India is aligned with USA then Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Myanmar, China would be contained despite no visible attempt of containment! In the mean time India's neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Male and Sri Lanka would also be aligned with India!

That's why China is ready to negotiate and partner with India in a bid to not allow anti-China grouping in its neighborhood. Interestingly it's actually Modi government's smart strategy that compelled China to start respecting India. India is really in a better position for bargaining with China on various disputed matters.

Apart from that, Modi too emerged as a powerful leader with decisive mandate. Thus two neighboring powerful leaders would really take on all the matters bilaterally with at par capacity and that's why one should agree on Ajit Doval's assertion that Sino-Indian tie would touch new dimension!

Also don't get surprise when XI Jinping would exhibit some extra ordinary friendship!
