CITY NGO Concern for Calcutta is doing a commendable work for the betterment of the city, said Mr. Somnath Chatterjee, former Speaker of Lok Sabha on the occasion of its Silver Jubilee as the Chief Guest.He called for a positive role of other NGOs as well for betterment of the City.
Speaking on the occasion,Mr. Narayan Jain, Presidentsaid that CChas emerged as a respected organization for its many-faceted activities and some enduring achievements. It aimed to move the people of Kolkata from apathy to awareness to action, to make Kolkata a better city to work and live in. The NGO has put up traffic guard rails at many places and is also maintaining Nature Study Park and Jatin Das Shishu Udyan at Hazra crossing, Mr. Jain added. It will be wrong to say, “Our Government is doing nothing”. To be fair, the present Government is trying its best to make Kolkata “Kallolini Tilottama” but it is not easy. CC is concerned that the city is virtually becoming an extended slum, thanks to uncontrolled growth of roadside eateries and stalls. The very air is hostile due to emission of diesel fuels from buses and autos. Water logging, poor drainage and Solid waste disposal is grossly inadequate and traffic management still remains chaotic, said Mr. Jain.
Mr. Harshvardhan Neotia, the key note speaker also appreciated the role of the NGO and expressed his deep sense of attachment for Calcutta. He also enlightened the audience by sharing his experience on how to become successful in life following some good ideals.
Mr. Somnath Chatterjee gave away award to ITC Ltd.for their corporate role for the betterment of the city and to Mr. Subhash Dutta for his commendable initiatives for protection of Environment. Some other corporates including Tata Steel, Exide, ABP, Subhas Projects. Eveready and Axis Bank were also recognized for their excellent contribution for the betterment of City.
CC has also initiated another ambitious project of Beautification of Rabindra Sarobar Lake with co-operation from Kolkata Improvement Trust (KIT) and other agencies. This Lake being a National Lake, the NGO is keen to see its maintenance of desired level, said Mr. Jain. A Silver Jubilee Volume was also released by Mr. Chatterjee.
