'Clean Ganga': 11-year-old girl swimmer to cover 550km of Ganga in 70 hours
With an aim to spread message of 'Clean Ganga', a 11-year-old swimmer from Uttar Pradesh - Shraddha Shukla - is all set to establish new records and will swim 550km through river Ganga from Kanpur to Varanasi in next 10 days. The distance is equivalent to 13 Olympic marathons of 42.195km on land.

Hundreds of people amassed together to cheer Shradhha at Kanpur's historic Massacre ghat from where she began her journey. Popularly famous as 'Nanhi Jalpari', Shukla started her journey on the occasion of National Sports Day. She will take refreshment and loo breaks after every 4 to 5 hours.

Shukla, who is setting records ever since she was 6, will be swimming about 60km a day, on an average. "I am not nervous. I am excited and confident of completing the challenge," said Shukla before diving into the river. "I am eyeing the national record," she added. Shukla, who will swim on an average 7 hours a day, is likely to reach Varanasi on the 10th day.

Basically from Kanpur, Shukla is taking up swimming challenges since very tender age under the watch of her father-coach Lalit Shukla. He along with others will accompany Shraddha on a boat. "She will swim between the net; it will keep her safe. She is not scared. All she has on her mind is the record," her father added. Lalit also said that Shradhha won't swim after 7.30pm in the evening.

"After this, I will focus on achieving my dream of going to the Olympics and swimming through the English Channel," said the girl

If successful, Shraddha would become the youngest in the nation and the first Indian girl to achieve such feat, claimed her father.

Earlier in 2014, Shraddha had covered a distance of 282km by swimming from Kanpur to Allahabad.

"I am really very excited and ready to better my previous performances. I am sure that I will complete the challenge," said Shraddha who was looking quite positive about her performance.
