Climate change no fake
It is not correct to say that climate has started cooling and there is no point in cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Let us keep on marching in the right direction and keep our cool to take an appropriate action at the right time.
COPENHAGEN HAS its share of Doubting Thomas. Their feeling is that in talks, speeches and writings, there is ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. The Climate Change Summit is nothing but a talking shop where men and women have gathered to compare notes and make a decision on where to meet next. Well, in a free democratic world, nobody will stop you from exercising the right of thought and expression. The Doubting Thomas is doing exactly the same. Let him please himself.
The facts on the ground, however, are different. A lot of work on data collection, collation and dissemination of information on climate change has been done. It is the hard work of these selfless gals and guys that has rung the alarm bell. It is because these persons burnt the midnight oil that global consciousness on global warming has made people of the world sit up and think about the seriousness of the problem.
Threat perception is both a science and an art. One has to be at it to understand what it is. Many a times, we don’t know what the threat to our existence is and where it is coming from. Unless we know it how are we going to take action to counteract it. In the case of the global climate change, the ignoramus thought that some crazy guys have got together and are just ringing the alarm bell. Thanks to the committed men and women in this field that now people in the remote areas and dark continent also know about the danger to the very existence of planet earth.
What to do now?
The University of East Anglia has a Climatic Research Unit and it has been doing a fine job in the field and in the laboratory. However, their e-mails were hacked and it was a scandal. The rival camp stated a campaign that the concept of global change is a mere figment of imagination. Some scientists and publicists are talking about it to create a scare and make money by organising conferences on global army and pressurising developing countries more than the developed countries to cut on industrial growth and the greenhouse gas emissions. The charge was indeed frivolous and deserves to be dismissed forthwith.
The Unites States, China, India, Brazil, South Africa and some more countries have arrived at a consensus to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and contribute their share in reducing global warming. It will be for the good of the humans and the planet earth.
The claim of recent cooling of climate is rather deceptive. It would be unwise to undo the work of past couple of decades on global warming and say that since global cooling is in motion, the threat to our mother, planet earth has disappeared. It will just be an ostrich-like tendency to bury the head in sand at the approach of a danger and announce that there is no danger. It will indeed be suicidal. Let us not commit Harakiri. We have perceived the threat and taken action to counter it. Let us keep on marching in the right direction and keep our cool to take an appropriate action at the right time.
