CM Yogi seeks report on UP minister Swati Singh inaugurating beer bar
On May 20, UP minister Swati Singh had inaugurated the beer bar named "Be the Beer' in Lucknow's Gomti Nagar locality.

Photographs of the minister cutting the ribbon of the beer bar had gone viral on social media and stirred a controversy. In fact, the opposition parties raised questions on Tuesday on whether this was the true face of the new BJP government of Uttar Pradesh.

The incident which has put CM Yogi Adityanath in a spot of bother, prompted him to seek a report.

An official spokesperson on Monday said, "The CM has taken a cognisance of the minister inaugurating a beer bar in the presence of senior officers and sought a clarification from them."

Swati Singh is the wife of Dayashankar Singh who had been suspended for making derogatory remarks against BSP supremo Mayawati. However, the minister was unavailable for comments.

The incident comes at the heels of the state of Uttar Pradesh witnessing widespread protests against allowing sale of liquor, especially from women's groups. The opposition parties have been severely critical of the Adityanath government post the incident.

Congress leader Dwijendra Tripathi said, "They speak about things only to woo the public. Their leaders talk about prohibition while a minister of their's goes to inaugurate a beer bar." He also expressed doubt on whether the bar was even licensed.

However, on the other hand, BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi has come out in defence of the minister by saying that she has done nothing illegal as alcohol in not prohibited in Uttar Pradesh.

Tripathi said, "It has to be known under what circumstances she had taken part in the inauguration. It is said that a woman is the owner of the outlet and the minister was there to promote entrepreneurship among women."

Sawti Singh is the Minister of State of Women Welfare, Family Welfare, Maternity and Child Welfare in the present UP government.
