Collaborative enquiry based contextual researches are viable for practitioners' growth, suggest studies
"Collaborative enquiry based researches, that make sense of practitioners' own knowledge and lead to their growth are viable in the present times since when practitioners don the role of researchers, the become the important linkage between the theory and action," said the lead researcher at Disha Foundation – the institution of which two papers making use of collaborative enquiry method with triads of practitioner-researchers have been accepted for a conference at Punjab University, Chandigarh, end of this month.

The two papers titled "Bringing Education Therapy in the Classroom of Children with Special Needs: A Lesson Study on Doodling and Its Decoration as Therapeutic Tool for Motor Coordination Improvement" and "The Case of Transition From Home Language to School Language for Rural Girls of Rajasthan In Multi-Age and Multi-Grade Small School Setting: A Secondary Analysis from Social Pedagogy Point View," have been a authored by collaborative research team of Dr Lalit Kishore as lead researchers with Dr Alka Awasthi, Varsha Tikkiwal and Paula Ahoa, who is an intern at Disha from a university in Finland. She is doing her masters in Social Pedagogy and the concept has analysed in the paper which analyses a language transition intervention from the web of relationships in the school setting.

"Unfortunately, there is emphasis on survey and empirical studies types of researches in social sciences which hardly provide any leads to actions in various contexts. The biggest challenge of research in social sciences is about how to cross fertilize the practical knowledge and theoretical knowledge, and promotion of collaborative researches can foot the bill in this regard," holds the researcher.

According to the editors of the books on 'Improving School Series' Alma Harris and Jane McGrege, "In education, as elsewhere, the new century has also been characterised by calls for a greater understanding for the processes of knowledge creation and the transfer of practice. This reflects the increasingly sophisticated practice-based theorising throughout the social sciences that is developing rapidly and being tested through research."

However, the trends of collaborative enquiry and appreciative enquiry methods has not picked up in India and such methods need to be included in the research methodology courses and practitioners need to be trained the in-house researches and studies to continually improve their practice in an informed way, I think.
