TWO PEOPLE were killed and more than 50 people received injuries when the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) attacked Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka on Friday night (February 20). The Tamil Tigers retaliated heavily after the Sri Lankan armed forces destroyed almost all of the LTTE hideouts in the island country.

The two aircrafts were on a suicide mission. Later, the LTTE claimed that two soldiers of their elite Black Air Tiger suicide squad piloted the two light aircraft and carried out the attack on the headquarters of the Inland Revenue Department in the heart of the capital.

The Tigers targeted the Sri Lankan Air Force Headquarters, situated at the heart of the capital. It is adjacent to the country’s only international airport, located 28 kms north from here.

As soon as the LTTE attacked the city, the electricity was cut off and the Lankan army started countering the LTTE attack with anti aircraft guns.

The swift action of the Lankan air force and intense anti-aircraft fire by the Lankan troops saved the city from more damage.

The Lankan army shot down one of the Tiger aircrafts near the Katunayake International Airport. Later, the second Tiger aircraft crashed into the multi-storeyed Inland Revenue building, located close to the air force headquarters in Colombo.

The Lankan army recovered the body of the LTTE pilot from Katunayake area. The aircraft was reported to be carrying a large quantity of explosives and bombs. The dead Tiger pilot was also carrying two cyanide capsules.

The two planes were piloted by a self-styled ’Colonel’ Roopan and ’Lieutenant Colonel’ Siriththiran. President Mahinda Rajapaksa condemned the suicide bid of LTTE and announced that the Lankan forces would destroy all the LTTE bases and make Sri Lanka free from anti-national powers. The Lankan troops have already captured two main LTTE bases in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu. Now, the Lankan army has almost cornered the rebels in an area of less than 100 sq km in the north-eastern Mullaitivu district.
