HOME MINISTER, P. Chidambaram on Thursday said that the government intends to introduce a bill on honour killings soon. Taking a note of the increasing cases of honour killings, he urged that the perpetrators of the crime must be identified and punished with severity.
While addressing the Lok Sabha, Chidambaram asserted that such cases were bringing dishonour to the families, society and the country. He said that whoever is responsible for this crime, an individual or a group must be punished. He also said that his duty was to ensure that the laws made by the Parliament are obeyed and enforced and the accused are punished.
Chidambaram said this while responding to a calling attention notice give by CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta and other MPs. The Home Minister said that the issue has been engaging the government for quite a long time and the point of discussion was whether it should be an independent law or an amendment in the existing provision of the Indian Penal Code.Lok Sabha speaker, Meira Kumar also expressed serious concerns over the issue and said that young ones are being killed by people, who are supposed to love them.
