THE UNION cabinet on Thursday, November 5, approved a revised budget of Rs 1,620 crore as a loan to the Organising Committee (OC) of the Commonwealth Games, 2010 to organise the XIX Commonwealth Games (CWG) at Delhi from October 3 to 14, 2010. The earlier approved budget for the games was Rs 767 crore.
The reason for this increase in the budget, according the sports ministry is due to inclusion of a number of new items required for the successful execution of the game. These include city operations, TV rights, ticketing and various other heads, which were not included in initial budget.
There has also been some changes in the construction of accommodation facilities, additions in the opening and closing ceremonies, communication, insurance and number of other activities. Another important reason is the increase in the number of days of the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR), International leg – from 136 to 240 days. Subsequently, days of the Domestic leg have also increased - from 60 to 100 days. The revised QBR route covers all 70 CGA nations and territories in the international leg and all states in the national leg.
There has also been a substantial increase in the number of volunteers who would be inducted for the international sports extravaganza.
