THE TRI-NATION Compaq Cup seems to be in troubled waters even before the cricket series has begun. Today (September 2), a lawyer in Madurai filed a petition asking for a ban on the Indian Cricket Team's tour for the event hosted by Sri Lanka, at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
Joel Paul Antony, the lawyer in question, filed the petition on moral grounds, in the wake of 12 lakh Tamils murdered in the Island nation over the last 60 years, in the most inhumane way. He stated that many Tamils were still languishing in open air jails to this day there.
Counting numerous human rights violations by Sri Lanka, Anthony claimed that to this day, International human rights organisations were not permitted to observe the conditions there. He argued that the Indian cricket team should shun the event on moral grounds.
The Indian Cricket team was all set to leave for the five day ODI series, which would begin on September 8.
According to reports, about 512 lawyers signed the petition on which a hearing might be held next Tuesday (September 8).
