Concerned Gurgaon citizens launch online petition to put a brake on road accidents
Every tragedy tries to herald a social change so that the same incident is not repeated again. Gurgaon is witnessing a number of road accidents of late and although, every death is tragic in its wake, yet the accident of the cardiologist and his little daughter shook the people of the millennium city to walk towards change.
A group of citizens in Gurgaon, by the name of concerned citizen has launched an online petition signing campaign targeted towards the HUDA Administrator, the MCG and the the Gurgaon
Police with the demand of specifying speed limit of cars on the streets of Gurgaon
and making it ‘walk friendly’ for pedestrian. They have also appealed for repairing of the footpaths and maintaining them rubble free. The petition reads Paidal Yatri Safe Gurgaon - In memory of little Lineshya.
This petition, found the support of many so that basic human error of speeding and better infrastructure can be focused on. At the time of filing this article, there were 387 supporters who had signed the online petition on Change.org including MCG Councillor Ms. Nisha Singh. Being the councillor of the ward, which saw the terrible accident, she was one of the people who initiated the petition and when contacted spoke at length about the basic road safety measures absent in Gurgaon. ''Basically, the idea is that we need safe movement of motorized vehicle in the city. Every Indian city choke due to excessive amount of vehicle and we need to find an alternative of the same. We need to find an alternative solution to make our city vehicle free,'' she said.
Adding to that and talking about the petition she also said, ''When we were younger, we used to travel a lot on our foot, but now the older generation laments that they can't even take a simple walk outside their homes due to rash driving. What happened to Lineshya was that her dad and she was standing on a road and got hit by a bus. Thus, our petition demands a speed limit for every road. Also we need footpaths, where people can walk or stand without fearing for their life.''
The various other petitioner have noted down their reason for support on the Change.org page. As per Ekta Jafri, one of the petitioner, she supports the petition because “I travel on the those roads too. With my children...”
Another petitioner Rajeev Kumar Sharma also wrote, '' Strict rules should be in place and strict penal actions should be there for their enforcement.
Foothpaths, Cycle tracks and Foot over bridge at busy intersections such as HUDA Metro Stations are the need of hour and administration should immediately take necessary steps to ease the life of general public.''
