Conference on Mediation organized in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh
A Regional Conference on Mediation was organized at Shimla on Sunday, 22nd December in the High Court by the HP State Legal Services Authority and the Mediation Committee, High Court of H.P. The conference was inaugurated by the Acting Chief Justice Sh. Mansoor Ahmad Mir.

In his inaugural address, the Acting Chief Justice underlined the significance of resolving conflicts through the process of mediation. He said that mediation has a great potential for providing satisfying solutions to dispute. He said that the mediation attempts to change a dispute from a “win-lose” to “win-win” situation. He said that such Alternative disputes resolution (ADR) mechanisms not only benefit masses, but lawyers and other professionals are also likely to have avenues for diversification.

Around 160 mediators from Shimla, Solan, Kinnaur and Sirmour Districts participated are being trained today in the process of mediation and conciliation. Papers on mediation activities in the four Districts were also presented.

Till now, 201 mediators have been trained in Himachal Pradesh and 11 ADR Centres are being constructed. 210 cases have been settled/compromised during mediation proceedings from January to October 2013.

Justice D.D. Sud and Justice Sanjay Karol also spoke on the occasion underscoring the objective of the Regional Conference to enhance the skills and knowledge of the participant Judicial Officers about the techniques and benefits of mediation in amicable settlements of disputes.

A handbook on mediation was also released by the Acting Chief Justice on this occasion. The Mediation Monitoring Committee of H.P. will also be organizing Campus Mediation Awareness Week to educate and expose the youth on constructive ways of resolving differences amicably. It will include mediation talks for students, a seminar on campus mediation for teachers, a mediation exhibition and performances will be put up the students. All secondary and post-secondary Schools shall be invited to participate in this Public education exercise.

Judges of H.P. High Court Justice D.D. Sud, Justice Sanjay Karol, Justice Kuldip Singh, Justice Rajiv Sharma, Justice V.K. Sharma and Justice Dharam Chand Chaudhary were present on the occasion. The Registrar General A.C. Dogra, Registrars of the High Court Sh. Sureshwar Thakur, Sh. Sushil Kukreja, Sh. K.S. Chandel and Sh. Arvind Malhotra alonwith the Chairmen of the four District Legal Services Authorities were also present.
