IN AN unfortunate incident, a boat capsized on a river in Democratic Republic of Congo which killed at least 140 people, the provincial governor's office said in a statement on Thursday.
This incident comes just days after an aeroplane Airbus A321 crashed near Islamabad in Pakistan killing all 152 person on board.
The boat overturned in one of the tributaries of the Congo, the Kasai river, which is in the western area of the country.
"I can confirm the accident. We're currently in a crisis meeting," said a source in the Bandundu province governor's office on the promise of anonymity. The source further confirmed the number of deaths to be no less than 140.
The boat originated from Mushie (about 20 miles from Bandundu, the main town of province) carrying passengers and goods.
River transport is one of the most widely used modes of transportation, used throughout DR Congo. The river Congo which is 4700 kilometres (2915 miles) long is one of the several waterways of the country.
Though unfortunate, but it is a recurrent phenomenon in Congo where overcrowded boats kill scores every year in boat disasters.
In November 2009, at least 73 people died when two linked barges sank on Mai-Ndombe lake in Bandundu province. In September 2009, no less than 250 people died in three boat accidents on Congolese waterways.
