Congress attacks RBI Guv Urjit Patel on demonetisation; Finance Minister comes to rescue
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh is the latest to attack Urjit Patel, the Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the demonetisation move and has questioned Patel's role in the policy.

In the Congress party's journal National Herald, Ramesh has written, "Urjit Patel is either guilty of misleading the nation about RBI's preparedness on demonetisation, or has sacrificed the autonomy of the RBI. Either way he should resign."

Ramesh also said that since RBI is the monetary authority and is solely responsible for making bank notes in India and if notes are now not available now and there is a shortage, the accountability lies with the RBI.

Ramesh also questioned the RBI Governor's "stoic silence" at a time when the government has taken such an important decision.

Ramesh said that the RBI is an independent & autonomous institution and needs to clarify the present situation.

"How can the head of RBI that is solely responsible for the current currency crisis not be seen clarifying and assuring the nation amid this grave crisis?" he questioned.

Speaking at a press conference, Ramesh said, "The other main reason is that the Prime Minister has seen the writing on the wall with regard to UP elections. That's why he wanted some dramatic move."

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley called the attack on Patel "unfair".

"An unfair attack by Jairam Ramesh on the RBI Governor. Must politicians attack those who can't defend themselves in the same tone?" Jaitley tweeted.
