DAYS AFTER Prime Minister Manmohan Singh claimed that there was no rift between the government and the ruling party over the Indo-Pak joint statement released in Egypt, the Congress on Monday openly came in defence of the prime minister, who had come under fire over the drafting of the statement.
Congress General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said that the Congress was confident that Manmohan Singh would settle all concerns, apprehensions and speculation, in his talk in Parliament on July 29. The statement assumes significance in the wake of a crucial party meeting on Saturday, which was attended by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. It appears that the party's high command, after discussing the matter threadbare, decided to support the Prime Minister.
The Congress party has been wary of supporting the Indo-Pakistan joint statement, as it mentions the Balochistan issue and it has also given an impression that India was ready to de-link terror from dialogue.
