The practice should be to achieve consensus on the final selection by picking up a unanimous choice from amongst the short-listed names. It may be recalled that only in the year 2009, Prime Minister had honoured the objections raised by L K Advani.
THIS REFERS to media-reports about Union government going ahead with the the name of PJ Thomas as its choice for the post of next Chief Vigilance Commissioner overlooking objections by opposition leader Sushma Swaraj in her capacity as member of three-members’ Selection Committee comprising also Prime minister and Union Home Minister as other two members.
Overlooking objections by Swaraj will make the entire process meaningless as this is a key appointment and government should ensure that there is consensus on such appointments. The practice should be to achieve consensus on the final selection by picking up a unanimous choice from amongst the short-listed names. It may be recalled that only in the year 2009, Prime Minister had honoured the objections of the then Leader of Opposition,L K Adwani.
It happened when the name of a new Chief Information Commissioner could not be announced because LK Adwani had reservations on the only name floated for the post by the government. Union government should achieve unanimity on choice of new Chief Vigilance Commissioner as this vacancy has to be filled before October 1, 2010.It is very important that key positions like these are filled by people having unimpeachable integrity and who have the statistics and records speaking for themselves as upholders of truth, honesty and dignity.
