TODAY CONSUMER is the king of the market. He spends his hard earned money on goods, therefore, he has every right to get value in return. The Government of India has started a consumer awareness programme. As a consumer, we should know our rights. It is our right to insist on a cash receipt against the payment for goods purchased. We should always go for an original and genuine product.

If our rights are violated, we can complain and approach the consumer courts for compensation. While purchasing medicine, it is our duty to buy them from a licensed medical store only. We should check the expiry date, name of the manufacturer and weight of the product before buying the product. Today, the consumer has the right to be protected against marketing of goods and services, which are hazardous to life and property.

Today, a consumer should be aware of quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard and price of goods. Besides quality of the products, the consumer today should ask for the guarantee of the products and services. Consumers must make complaint for their genuine grievances. Even if the value of the goods involved in their complaint is small, its impact on the society as a whole will be large.

Therefore, consumers must know their rights and must exercise those. Real protection of consumers can be successfully achieved only with active involvement of consumers. They should preferably purchase quality marked products such as ISI, AGMARK, FPO, etc. Illiteracy is one of the major drawbacks that leads to exploitation of consumers. The level of consumer consciousness in our country is generally low. Therefore, nowadays, the government is creating a lot of awareness among consumers through mass media, about their rights.

I fully appreciate with the contents of this message but when an individual fights for his rights against the mightiest Banks / service & goods providers,I believe, the Consumer Forum should stand by him & ask questions on his behalf rather than other way round because, the mightiest will employ best of best advocates, tricks to hoodwink in the process & defeat the purpose of the law.Uday Prabhu
