The causes of heart arrhythmia can be scarring of heart tissue, changes in heart structure, blockage of the arteries, diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, overactive thyroid gland, smoking, drug abuse, stress, medication, dietary supplement and herbal treatment, and electrical shock.
There are no symptoms of heart arrhythmia and usually the doctor diagnoses it through a routine examination. But some people have some noticeable arrhythmia symptoms like a racing heartbeat, a fluttering in chest, a slow heartbeat, shortness of breath, chest pain, lightheadedness, fainting and dizziness.
Usually the treatment for arrhythmia is not needed and it is resolved on its own. The treatment is needed only when the symptoms of arrhythmia are creating complications. The treatment for arrhythmia can be vagal maneuvers, medication, cardioversion and ablation therapy. Sometimes implantable devices like pacemakers and Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) can also be used for treatment.
Nowadays new kinds of treatment for heart arrhythmia are done by using Electromechanical Wave Imaging (EWI); it is a new kind of technique to map the electrical activation of the heart; it is based on ultrasound imaging. This technique has made the treatment of arrhythmia more efficient than earlier, reported Science Daily.
The medications used for heart arrhythmia are anti-arrhythmic medications, calcium channel blocking agents and anticonvulsents. The medications used for heart arrhythmia may not cure the problem, but they could be helpful in reducing the episodes of tachycardia or bradycardia.
