Content, branding discussed at National Radio Meet
Content, Branding, Strategising, AIR, regional radio and content diversification were some of the issues discussed at the Day 2 of the National Radio Meet organised by the Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication in Lavale campus, Pune.
THE SECOND day of National Radio Meet, began with equal amount of zeal and enthusiasm on the September 20, 2009 at the Lavale campus of Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, Pune.
 
The day saw a plethora of speakers from the radio Industry all across India.
After the inaugural speech by Prof Ujjwal Kumar Chowdhury, Director, SIMC, the first session began with the theme “Regional radio flavours and content diversification in the radio industry today”.Three different phases in the privatisation of the radio industry qwere emphasised in the Day 2 meet.
 
Sanjeev Kumar Singh, CEO; Radio Dhoom, spoke on the importance of regional language in program formatting. He said, “Regional Flavour is the only thing that brings about a change in the radio sound. Mamta Dixit, an RJ with AIR, on the other hand, spoke of the evolution of All India Radio as the listener friendly station more that the Aakashwani (Voice of the God) which was previously the image of AIR. She also elaborated on the importance of the language, its essence, pronunciation and diction and the utilisation of voice.
 
George Sebastian, GM, Club FM, a Kerela based radio station, said that the radio content should be local, relevant and personal. He further stated that an RJ gets approximately four minutes in an hour to talk and create an impact and thus concluded that it is the listeners who decide the content and the presentation style. Monica Nayyar, CEO, Radio Choklate, a Bhubaneswar based radio station, talked about the birth and success of Radio Choklate because of its success in establishing a connect with its listeners.
 
The Institute also launched Symbi FM, a radio station for the entire campus, in association with Radio One, Pune. Here, in the next one year SIMC will have a daily slot barring weekends with Radio One from 4 pm-5 pm. The team of MJ's (Music Jockey) was introduced from both the current PG batches of SIMC. A Radio management course of SIMC in association with Radio One and BBC was also launched.
 
Tapas Sen, National Programming Director, Radio Mirchi, Tarun Katial, COO, BIG FM and Vineet Singh Hukmani, MD, Radio One, engaged the students post lunch and talked about the existing brand strategies and re-branding options available to radio stations today. On one hand where Sen began with the insights not provided in media schools, Katial spoke about making strategies and their successful implementation. Singh, meanwhile, spoke about branding and re-branding, personalising your brand. He referred to Hero Honda as an example.
 
The students bombarded the speakers with questions and also got satisfying answers to clear the cloud of doubts and apprehensions regarding the branding and strategising of the radio industry.
