COMING UNDER thick flak for frisking a former Indian President, US based Continental Airline on Wednesday (July 22), said that it had tendered a formal apology to APJ Abdul Kalam.
The apology comes a day after civil aviation minister Praful Patel had promised in the Parliament that action would be taken against those involved in insulting the former Indian President. He had admitted that frisking Kalam was an unpardonable act after there there was an uproar in the Rajya Sabha over the issue.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Continental Airlines said that it had never intended to offend the sentiments of the Dr Kalam. “We apologise to Kalam for any inconvenience caused,” the airlines said.
Continental also reiterated its commitment to comply with the rules. It is pertinent to mention that Indian rules exempt dignitaries like former presidents, prime ministers and chief justice of India including several others from being frisked at airports.
The aviation ministry had contemplated an FIR against the airlines for violating Indian law and inuslting the former President Kalam, who was made to take off his shoes and undergo full body frisking by the airline staff on April 21, this year.
.I interviewed TSA, Continental and Various heads of Airline security staff in USA. After extensive research Continental Airlines was right. Several telecommunications happened, Where were Indian protocol officers from MEA and Airport Authorities, where was PR lady Aprna Shrivastva -She should be fired
.Phoneys can inflate their ego by telling that Continental was brought to its knees by the cacophony in RS and apologized. But, it simply said it DID NOT INTEND to "offend the former President or the sentiments of the people of the country." Any neutral observer will construe it as: "But, we don't regret what we did; if it offends you, it's your headache!! The company just regretted the "misunderstanding or the inconvenience" related to the security screening on April 21. To avoid insults in future, it is wise to prune the list of exemptions to exclude non-entities like Sonia and Vadra and make rules sensible.
