Contrary to Rahul Gandhi's claim the Congress has never been there for Muslims
Sometime back, a student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) asked veteran Congress leader Salman Khurshid the following question:

"The first amendment was in 1948. Then, there was Presidential order in 1950. After that Hasanpura, Maliana, Muzaffarnagar and there is a long list of riots under the Congress regime. Then there was the opening of the gates of Babri Masjid, placing idols inside and then the demolition of Babri Masjid while Congress was in power at the Centre. Congress has Muslims' blood on its hands. What do you have to say about it?"

Responding to the question during an event organized at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Khurshid had said, "I am a part of Congress so let me accept that we have the blood of Muslims on our hands. I am telling you this; we are ready to show the blood on our hands so that you understand that you too must not get blood on your hands."

The only difference between the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru reign and now is that the open expressions of hatred and bigotry against Muslims have become the new normal, from schools to universities, workplaces to living rooms, internet to political rallies. Even the most modern and advanced Muslims have been forced to live with the everyday fear of hate and violence. Public lynching of Muslims for any odd reason has become a common occurrence of country life. It carries the unmistakable social message that Muslims are rendered as second class citizens. The assailants - the lynch mobs make videos of their game and triumphantly circulate while police response is rarely in favour of the victims. The witnesses back out, the cases are weakened and the criminals go scot free most of times.

As a secular Muslim who is an ardent and fervent student of history, culture and politics, I for one would never trust Congress that is led by Sonia or Rahul Gandhi.

However, on July 12, an article appeared in the Urdu daily Inquilab, according to which Congress President Rahul Gandhi had said that the Congress party is a political party of the Muslim community. The daily quoted Gandhi as saying, "Yes, Congress is a Muslim party". A screenshot of the article is posted below, an excerpt of which reads, "If BJP says that Congress is a party of Muslims, it is fine. Congress is a party of Muslims, because Muslims are weak and Congress always stands with the weak" (translated). According to the report, Gandhi had said these words at a closed-door meeting with members of the Muslim community.

It was a windfall for the BJP as it is staring today at sure defeat in coming elections in states as well as Lok Sabha in 2019 as common Indian is realising that he / she was taken for a ride in 2014. No matter how much saffron brigade vitiates the communal atmosphere of this country, the Indians are going to decide upon the PROMISES that were made in 2014 and the achievement so far which are next to nil. The issue of 'Congress – a party of Muslims' is expectedly reaching a crescendo as the TRPs of TV channels and race of loyalties to House of RSS is looking like steeple chase. All horses are in the full gallop mode. The BJP, as one would expect got an opportunity to salvage its flotsam and it was quick to latch on to this news report. Now, the whole saffron battery is engaged in 'Neck or Nothing' blitzkrieg against Congress to divert the public attention from the pathos it is facing since the BJP has come to power.

Muslims in India are the largest minority. They number about 200 million. Their population in India is more than that of Muslim countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran or Turkey. Indian Muslims have always been a vibrant minority. They have contributed immensely to the cultural diversity of India. Their first decline happened when the Mughals slowly lost control of Delhi and the British took over the country. The second decline began when India was divided between Indian and Pakistan. India chose to be a secular state and Congress took over the reins. Since then, the language of majority of Muslims – Urdu, their culture, their economy, commerce and education began to roll down the hill. The Congress party had shown some interest in Muslims till Nehru was alive. After Nehru, the Congress was successfully infiltrated by the RSS and it was then a facade for the world to conceal the true designs. Gradually, the culture and traditions of majority got the upper hand. The government was run by a so-called party but all the rituals of Hindu religion practiced by the state machinery. Some Muslims were given mostly ceremonial posts. This facade went on during the long tenure of Congress party and the charade has finally ended since RSS / BJP captured power.

The clandestine RSS / BJP agenda includes degradation of the Indian Muslims and creating a pure Hindu state (Akhand Bharat). The BJP is asking the Muslims to assimilate in the Hindu society by giving up their Islamic identity and Islamic personal law. They have not yet demanded Muslims change their names but the time is not far when it will happen if the BJP captures power in 2019.

For the Muslims, Congress and the BJP are like Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

Quoting a report from the Inquilab, Defence Minister Sitharaman alleged that Gandhi had told Muslim intellectuals that "Congress is a Muslim party. Congress party is playing a dangerous game, playing communal division, playing up the card of religion. It is frightening that it may lead to the kind of division and kind of communal disharmony that prevailed during the 1947 partition. Congress party shall be solely responsible if any disharmony plays out between now and the 2019 elections," she said.

In the meanwhile, historian Syed Irfan Habib, who was among the Muslim intellectuals who met Gandhi on Wednesday, denied that the Congress leader had made any such remark. "There was nothing like that. There was no issue of this nature raised, neither by the people present over there nor Rahul Gandhi himself. Nobody raised any such thing. It is just a figment of imagination of all those who want to give it a twist because they are doing it for their own political advantage. There is nothing at all. There is no basis at all," Habib told The IndianExpress.

Not long ago, Sonia Gandhi had declared that the Congress suffered because the BJP persuaded people that it was a Muslim party, many Muslims felt their expulsion to the political wilderness was complete.

How can the Muslims forget that the conduct of the Congress leadership at the state and Centre during the course and aftermath of the Gujarat riots was "quite vacillatingly obnoxious", it had been the soulless secularism and over-sensitivity to Hindu sentiments. The Congress president Sonia Gandhi did never find time or opportunity to visit Zakia Jafriduring her Gujarat visit after the riots, for expressing condolence.

So, I would conclude the article by recapitulating that for the Muslims, Congress party and BJP are the same. One is openly belligerent while the other has been doing the same job with finesse for 70 years.

And of course, we the Muslims know that.
