With the state election commission fixing the assembly polls in Tamil Nadu on April 13 and the model code of conduct coming into force, the ruling DMK alliance's two flagship pro-poor schemes have come to a grinding halt.
THE FREE distribution of 1,62,80,000 colour television sets and conversion of 21 lakh huts to concrete houses, have been stalled with 10 lakh more TV sets are yet to be distributed and only 60,000 houses have been completed in the first phase of construction.
Media has promptly echoed DMK’s disappointment over the sudden announcement of poll date and stalling of two major pro-poor schemes. While the opposition has already got a stick to beat DMK in the name of not fulfilling 2006 poll promises, DMK is planning to change the situation to their fullest advantage. No one would ask why the DMK did not distribute the entire quantum of television sets within five years and why they can't at least distribute tokens for all the 21 lakh housing scheme beneficiaries? They deliberately delayed the schemes so that the party can show the remaining (10 lakh) TV sets lying in the godowns to the prospective people and demand for vote, “If you want television sets/houses you vote for us.”
So, ten lakh television sets lying at godowns would invariably converted into votes for DMK, a good poll strategy indeed. Those who got only the tokens would surely vote for DMK and those who are waiting to get the token too invariably would vote for the party. Similarly, those who have already benefited in the housing scheme would vouch for the party, while others, who are in the waiting would want the party to retain power so that their aspirations to have a concrete house would be fulfilled in the next five years. So, it’s two-way advantage for DMK or can we call “getting two birds with one stone?” They can gain sympathy by blaming the EC for stopping the pro-poor schemes and can also show the left out work to gain political advantage. Not knowing this, the media has portrayed as if the DMK at its disadvantage after EC banned state-sponsored freebies. Indian media needs to be matured to see both sides. On the other hand, AIADMK combine are busy preparing a list of poll promise to outwit DMK’s established schemes. They will also counter the ruling combine for not fulfilling their past poll promises, corruption at higher ends, price rise, crime graph etc. But they are all thanking one man who is languishing in Tihar Jail, none other than former telecom minister A Raja. The opposition has one strong stick to beat DMK in the name of the 2G spectrum orchestrated by Raja. But the arrest of Raja much before the announcement of election date has undoubtedly reduced their aggression and even blunted their weapon against DMK. Though the honorable Supreme Court is time and again reminding people about the 2G scam, the issue is not as hot as it was two months ago. So before elections, it will further get cooled and DMK will surely take advantage of it. It’s DMK’s and Congress’ strategy to remove Raja from the hot scene so that people will not question their “integrity”. If any one asks, these politicians will have one standard dialogue “law will take its own course”.
