Cooperative learning leads to value-oriented education
A large number of educators feel the competition in the school level education should be de-emphasized and value orientation of education should be brought about by strengthening the sociological foundation of education through group work and cooperative learning that promotes caring and sharing.

In other words, there is a need to bring cooperative learning strategies to the center stage with new technologies as one of the many supportive tools that aid learning. Cooperative learning is an approach to organizing classroom environment, space and activities into academic and pro-social learning experiences.

Cooperative learning differs from merely assigned group tasks since it requires academic and social efforts for structuring positive interdependence in learning. An effective cooperative learning task is pro-social as well as intellectually demanding through higher order thinking tasks. Therefore, unlike competition-based individual learning and norm-based whole class teaching, cooperative learning mobilizes resources and skills of learners predominantly in an environment of mutual caring and sharing.

According to educators Brown and Ciuffetelli five basic elements of cooperative learning are the positive interdependence; face-to-face supportive and promotional interaction; individual and group accountability; social skills and group processing.

Keeping in view the complementary strengths of positive social psychology and cooperative learning, it is being exceedingly felt strongly feel that education needs to be given a strong positive psycho-social foundation and de-emphasize competition at the school level keeping in view the potential problem areas of the present educational system like poor academic support or help-giving to students in small groups and unequal participation in classroom processes.

Characteristics of cooperative learning situation consist of features, like a group size of 2 to 6 students; Heterogeneous group composition; and Exposure, exploratory and revision learning tasks. The teacher’s roles consist of two main functions like providing of experience and information after exploratory task; and working as facilitator, model, guide, contingency manager, supervisor and supporter

For proper group work and interaction, students are to be oriented in certain values such as mutual respect, care, and courtesy, help-giving and help-seeking strategies; sharing; showing empathy; and taking turns.

Some recent research studies on cooperative learning have shown that it had significantly positive effect on student emotions and empathy; enhanced respect for diversity; better social acceptance and friendship; enhanced self-confidence; positive feelings towards the school, teachers and fellow students.

The best outcome in the schools which are based on cooperative learning exclusively, it has been reported that it increased the achievement levels of students as well made them to get humanized or better persons by developing their pro-social skills.
