United Nations International Day of Cooperatives (IDC) is celebrated on the first Saturday of July each year since 1995 to create awareness about cooperatives and highlight contribution of the cooperative movement. Theme for this year's IDC is 'Cooperative enterprises build a better world'.
IN HIS message on the occasion of IDC-2012 issued on the UN website, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, "On this International Day of Cooperatives, we celebrate how cooperatives build a better world by advancing sustainable development, social integration and decent work."
Ban added that cooperatives empower their members through the values of self-help, equality and solidarity. "Cooperatives are also critical in supporting indigenous communities, and in offering productive employment opportunities for women, youth, persons with disabilities, older persons and others who face discrimination and marginalization," he stated.
Ban urged all stakeholders to continue building awareness and pursuing policies to strengthen cooperatives everywhere. "By contributing to human dignity and global solidarity, cooperatives truly do build a better world," he remarked.
