Corporators of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation raise unethical demands
Recently the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Council meet convened during the last week of May to elect Ward Committee Members was postponed due to lack of quorum. The reason explained by the Hon'ble Mayor of Hyderabad was that majority of the corporators were busy with relief operations in their respective divisions.

But, the fact was a different one. The corporators abstained from the meeting demanding that their workers be given chance as ward members. One hopes that their demand are not met, as these demands are against the rules and also purely unethical.

In the prescribed form the criterion of eligibility are as follows:

1.      A President/Secretary representing registered Residents Welfare Association in the Ward.

2.      A member of registered Tax Payers Association/Rate Payers Association in the Ward.

3.      A President/Secretary of Slum Level Federation of a Slum. In case of non-availability of a Slum Level Federation in a Ward, a senior most representative of a Self Help Group in the Ward.

4.      A member of a registered Association/Institution/Institute/Body or Organization or Non-Governmental Organization or Mahila Mandali or Trade Union/Chamber of Commerce/Medical Council in the Ward.

5.      Any other prominent citizen of the Ward.

The demands of the corporators and their absence from the council meet raises doubts that most of the applications filed for the Ward Committee might have been rejected on account of the above eligibility norms. May be due to non-availability of the Municipal Administration Minister, Telangana, the Corporation officials may have put on hold in releasing the actual facts.

As reported in the media, if the Telangana State Municipal Administration Minister is strong of his views that eminent people and other prominent personalities should be given a chance as ward members, hopefully he will out rightly reject the demands of the corporators to give party workers a chance to serve the post and reduction of tenure from 5 years to 1 year for the Ward Committee.

It is true that Ward Committee plays an important role in deciding developmental works being taken up in the respective wards, and do need people as suggested by the Municipal Administration Minister and citizens do welcome his suggestions.

The citizens do hope that there will be a fresh call for applications for Ward Committee Members through the Municipal Corporation website, once the stance and decision of the Municipal Administration are known officially.
