Coup attempt in Turkey an appalling, unacceptable assault on constitutional order: Freedom House
In response to the failed coup against Turkey's elected government, and signs of the start of a purge of thousands of judges and civil servants, an independent watchdog organization that supports democratic change, said, "The coup attempt was an appalling, unacceptable assault on Turkey's constitutional order."

The statement from 'Freedom House' also came in the wake of online blocking of tens of news media outlets, as well as threats to restore the death penalty in Turkey for the coup plotters.

Mark P. Lagon, president of Freedom House, in his statement said, "Respect for due process and the rule of law are absolutely essential if Turkey is to avoid falling deeper into civil conflict. We urge the government of Turkey to unite the country behind respect for its democratic, constitutional institutions rather than respond to the attempted coup with indiscriminate settling of scores."

Turkey is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2016 report, Partly Free in Freedom of the Press 2016 and Not Free in Freedom on the Net 2015.

Freedom House also monitors the status of freedom around the world, and advocates for democracy and human rights.
