Court's cognizance of Smriti Irani's educational qualifications: Teachers feel disappointed
With one of the Delhi courts taking a cognizance of a complaint filed against HRD Minister Smriti Irani for allegedly giving false information about her qualification, her image as a competent Union Human Resource Development Minister has taken a downward plunge.
A positive-negative-interesting (PNI) analysis regarding her image day before yesterday on the sidelines of teachers' seminar showed a shift towards a negative from positive-interesting image she had among teachers when she took oath as an HRD minister.

"Since now a court has taken the cognizance of her controversial qualifications, her image as a competent HRD minister is completely shattered. Even her decisions to introduce centrally-administered schools do not sound progressive. It is not important what educational qualification does she have, what is more bothersome is the dishonesty thrown up by wrong affidavits related to educational qualification. The least expected of HRD minister was to be sure of her qualifications. We had high hope from a female minister to make education system value-based and feminize it the elements of social and gender sensitivities, but the present row on her qualifications is let down," said a female teacher who earlier was an admirer of Irani.

Smriti Irani had been at the centre of controversy owing to her contradictory declarations about her qualifications when she contested Lok Sabha elections in 2004 and 2014. Right from her appointment as HRD minister there were mixed reactions of people and educators due to her low educational qualifications.

Even the noted Indian feminist scholar Madhu Kishwar was critical of Irani's appointment. At one occasion, Irani even boasted of a certificate of completion of six-day course from Yale University as academic qualification.

It may be recalled that it was in 2010, Irani was appointed as National Secretary of BJP and during the same year later she was appointed All India President of the BJP's women's wing called BJP Mahila Morcha.

In August 2011, she was sworn in as a member of parliament from Gujarat to the Rajya Sabha to begin her career as a politician. She claims to be the part of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from childhood and highly influenced by its ideology.
