CRICKET AUSTRALIA will meet in Melbourne on Friday to decide whether to allow private ownership of T20 franchises from Indian and other overseas investors. Indian investors are eying stakes in Australian sides including New South Wales and Victoria Bushrangers to encase the passion of T20 cricket in Australia.
It is expected that a T20 tournament based on the style of Indian Premier League, will start in Australia in January 2012 comprising eight teams. This tournament will replace traditional one-day cricket during January and February. Out of eight teams, six teams will be based in the state capital cities, and new licences are yet to be granted for the other two teams.
This short form of cricket competition will try to pick some big names from domestic and international cricketers to play for the Australian franchises. It would be the biggest shake-up since twenty five years back Kerry Packer changed the face of world cricket when he started World Series Cricket.
According to the various media reports, the Twenty20 franchises in Australia could be worth $ 80 million each. A Cricket Australia spokesman said, It's one of the big turning points in Australian cricket history. The Australian Cricketers' Association have given supports in the private ownership of Twenty20 teams.
