The controversy that started with the tweet of Lalit Modi over the involvement of Congress minister Shashi Tharoor in the bidding process of Kochi franchisee has metamorphosed into an eternal saga of misconducts, financial irregularities etc.
THE FOURTH edition of Indian Premier League (IPL-IV) is almost a year away, but the controversy associated to it has generated a lot of chaos not only in the sporting fraternity but in the corridors of politics as well. The latest fall guy of the controversy has been Union Cabinet Minister and former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief Sharad Pawar for his alleged involvement in the bidding process for a franchisee in IPL-IV. Time and again Sharad Pawar had been denying any kind of link with any bidding process to have been involved with, but whatever has been earthed in the last few days, speaks of totally a different ball game.
The controversy that started with the tweet of Lalit Modi over the involvement of Congress minister Shashi Tharoor in the bidding process of Kochi franchisee has metamorphosed into an eternal saga of irregularities, misconducts, financial irregularities, power politics and lies! What was initially thought as a passing storm has turned out to be a devastating tornado that has churned out the real dirty face of business of cricket in India.
Earlier, Sharad Pawar who had denied any sort of involvement, of late accepted the fact that they have a stake of 16.22 per cent in the City Corporation which had bid for the Pune franchisee, but again quite interestingly tried to give a new twist to the tale by alleging that the managing director Anirudh Deshpande had bid in his personal capacity and not for the company. However, the latest developments are that the BCCI chief Shashank Manohar, one time protégé of Sharad Powar, has denied that Anirudh bid on behalf of City Corporation and not in his personal capacity.
Now question arises- why is Pawar befooling the whole country? And secondly, why is Central government (read as Congress) not prompt in taking an action against him as it did against Shashi Tharoor? It seems as if Congress is playing a safe game by keeping itself aloof from taking action against a politician of Sharad Powar’s stature and the repercussions it would have in the stability of the government.
These are not good days for Indian cricket. Team India’s dismal performance at the T20 World Cup hasn’t been forgotten that the young brigade has performed pathetically in Zimbabwe. And back in India the governing body is surrounded among unwanted controversies and unlawful dealings, be it non participation of Indian cricket team in Asian Games or all the controversies surrounding Modis or Tharoors or Amins or Pawars…!
Sharad Pawar, who is all geared up to take up the top post of International Cricket Council (ICC) next year doesn’t find himself in a comfortable position after the latest controversy of his and his family members’ involvement in the bidding process. At the same time, there are indications that Sharad Pawar may be losing his stranglehold on the Indian cricket establishment with Lalit Modi’s suspension from IPL commissioner’s post and Shashank Manohar’s denial of Pawar’s theory of bidding in personal capacity.
The people of India would like to know the truth behind all the dirty games and politics being played in the name of cricket and IPL in particular. The cricket body and the cricket bosses are least bothered about the national interest and pride and their sole motto is to garner money at any cost. The whole controversy and financial irregularities have brought a bad name to the Indian cricket and to the country as a whole.
