The World Cup win of the Indian team, bought a smile on the face of all the Indians and the response of the Indians reaffirmed the faith that cricket in India is not just a game but a religion.
IN INDIA, sports is not much of a culture but defying this is the fact that every kid aspires to become a cricketer. Another funny fact is that many foreigners know the country, India, because of the internationally famous cricketers.
Today, cricket in India, has overshadowed all other games, and after the momentous World Cup win of 2011, it has further climbed up the popularity charts among the people of India.
This journey of cricket began in 1983, when the team India surprisingly won the World cup in Lords. Crossing many up and downs, controversies and news, it reached the World Cup of 2003, which brought hope in its wake as the Indian team entered the finals against Australia. Needless to say, the Australians destroyed the Indian team, and the Cup slipped away through their fingers. After the loss of the Cup in 2003, team India worked very hard and their efforts paid off when they won many series at home as well as in foreign countries. The big success that left a mark was when team India won the first T-20 World cup by beating Pakistan in the final under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It was a good start and it gave a boost to the Indian team. With this success, the team got over the defeat in 2003 World cup. After that series, a two match series with England was played. This series saw another win by the Indian team. The 2011 World cup win of India is a big achievement but at the same time a lot of pressure was created on the team during the tournament.
The team had to live up to the expectations of Indian supporters, who are passionate about this game. Everyone in the Indian team worked hard and the supporting staff helped them a lot. Thus, hard work compounded with lots of good wishes and prayers saw the Indian team lift the trophy in Mumbai. The entire graph of World Cup 2011 was not so smooth. A small instability was reflected in the England and South Africa game, but vanished after the team entered the quarter final. The entry into the quarter finals had its own challenges, as they had to face defending champions, Australia, but there also they won. It seemed as if lady luck was smiling upon the Indian team as they won not only against Australia but also the semi final against Pakistan. Although India won against Sri Lanka in the 2011 World Cup final, the entire sub continent felt happy as the cup was to stay in the sub continent. The finals saw a festival like celebration in India, as working people took an off or the employers gave an off so that everyone could be a part of the historic day. This reflected the passion and the madness for cricket. On judgment day, matters looked grim when Sachin and Sehwag got out even before the game started but Gambhir and Dhoni saved the day. When on one side Gambhir kept a steady hand and batted to score 97, the Indian Captain played the winning shot. Thus, the dream of Sachin was realized and India got the golden cup. Although, the Indian national game is hockey - this kind of passion has not been noticed for any other sport. Critics have said that this is a great partiality and other games should be given an equal importance by people and the government. However, the victory, bought a smile not only to the whole of team India but also on the faces of the people of India. The victory was celebrated in the entire country with fireworks and dholaks, so much so that it felt like Diwali in the month of April. The Indian team was felicitated with cash and kind by the state government and central government. After 28 years the cup came back to India.
