INDEFINATE CURFEW has been clamped in Manipur after protests broke out over the killing of a youth in an alleged fake encounter.
Authorities enforced curfew in Imphal after protesters burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and police commandos, who allegedly shot dead a youth identified as Chungkham Sanjit.
Angry protesters also blocked roads, burnt tyres and attacked the police personnel in many parts of the state.
Life in the state has been affected since Monday after Apunba Lup (AL) called for a 48-hour strike in the state to protests against the killing of Sanjit.
Traffic has been off the roads, particularly in state capital Imphal, while shops and business establishments also remained closed. Interstate transport service has also been serious affected with people finding it difficult to reach their destination.
Angry protests erupted in Imphal after a magazine published pictures of Sanjit's encounter. Opposition parties and social organisations have decried the killing as fake and alleged that it is terrorism by state.
Officials, however, maintain that 27-year old Sanjit was killed in an encounter with police commandos on July 23, in a busy Imphal market.
