Cut off marks for IIT-JEE entrance show an increase
The merit lists released by the Indian Institutes of Technology for the joint entrance examination (JEE) for the academic year 2010, have shown a slight increase in the cut off marks across categories (both open and reserved).
THE MERIT lists released by the Indian Institutes of Technology for the joint entrance examination (JEE) for the academic year 2010, have shown a slight increase in the cut off marks across categories (both open and reserved).

The qualifying score in the open category has increased from 178 in 2009 to 190 this year. It indicates that the last candidate in the merit list has scored 190 out of a total of 480. For the other backward categories (OBCs), the qualifying score climbed up by 10-marks from last year’s 161 and it stands at 171 this year.

For the candidates of the reserved category which includes students from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) as well as candidates with Physical Disabilities (PD), there has been a nominal two per cent increase in the cut offs. It was 18 per cent (89/480) last year which is nearly 20 per cent (95/480) this year for the current academic year.

Though subject wise cut-offs continuesto remain low, the cut off marks increased. The cut off marks for Chemistry and Physics in the open category have increased to 19; and for Mathematics, it is 17.

In the reserved category, the cut-offs marks have increased to 10 for Physics and Chemistry and nine for Mathematics as opposed to the cut-off of six (Chemistry and Mathematics) and four (Physics) in 2009.

“In actuality, numbers obtained by the last-admitted candidate are much higher than these (cut-off) marks. For example, in 2009, the subject cut-offs were 11 for Chemistry and Mathematics and eight for Physics. But the scores of the last general candidate selected were 72 (Chemistry), 31 (Mathematics) and 75 (Physics),” Anil Kumar, IIT-Bombay JEE chairman, said.
