CVC Thomas defends his appointment in Apex Court
Thomas was appointed the CVC in September last year by the UPA government, despite the opposition by BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, who had refused to endorse his appointment to the top post on account of his involvement in the 1991 Palmolein import scam.

CHIEF VIGILANCE Commissioner (CVC) PJ Thomas has made it clear that he will not resign from the top post as he defended his appointment in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Thomas in an affidavit told the Apex Court that there was no sanction to prosecute him after he was chargesheeted in a corruption case.

Thomas was appointed the CVC in September last year by the UPA government, despite the opposition by BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, who had refused to endorse his appointment to the top post on account of his involvement in the 1991 Palmolein import scam in Kerala. However, despite this, the panel comprising Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home P Chidambaram besides Swaraj, overruled her and appointed Thomas to the post of CVC.

His promotion was however was challenged in the Supreme Court and since then this decision has caused headache to the UPA government. The Apex Court has repeatedly questioned the wisdom of the government in appointing Thomas as CVC causing acute embarrassment to the Congress led UPA.

A day earlier, Home Minister P Chidambaram admitted that BJP leader Sushma Swaraj had indeed discussed the Palmolein case with the PM in a meeting in September. The BJP has repeatedly attacked the appointment of Thomas to put UPA in a corner as it feels that there is a strong case against him in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, sources said that UPA government is now in the mood to get rid of Thomas as he was becoming too heavy a baggage. But with Thomas refusing to toe the official line it would be difficult for UPA to remove him as rules require that CVC can only be impeached by the Parliament.
