Cyclone alert for Mumbai, Gujarat
Cyclone Phyan, is now moving towards the western coast posing a danger to Mumbai, Gujarat and Goa. People in low lying areas have been adviced to vacate at the earliest and fishermen warned against venturing out into the sea.
MUMBAI IS reeling under cyclone threat as the deep depression zone created over the Arabian Sea, named Cyclone Phyan, is now moving towards the western coast posing a danger to Mumbai, Gujarat and Goa. A cyclone threat has been declared by the Met department, leading to which, all the flights to and from Mumbai have been delayed.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Tuesday's drizzle could give way to a downpour and squalls up to 75 km an hour, which could uproot trees, in the next 48 hours. The cyclone is likely to move over the Indian mainland on Wednesday (November 11).
The cyclone is likely to hit the southern coast of Gujarat on Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by winds up to 85 km per hour and heavy rainfall up to 25 cm in the region, the Met department has said.
The Met department has predicted rough seas. People in low lying areas have been adviced to vacate at the earliest and fishermen warned against venturing out into the sea. All emergency services have been put on high alert.
The Met Department said on its website: "The system is likely to intensify into a cyclone and move in a northerly direction for some time more, and then north-northeastwards and cross the south Gujarat and north Maharashtra coast between Mahuva and Dahanu by the early hours of November 12."
