A Dalit man has died in police custody in Kanpur following which a case of murder has been registered against five police personnel, and entire staff of the police post has been suspended. The 12 suspended policemen include sub-inspector Yogendra Solanki and 11 constables.

A case of kidnapping has also been registered against the policemen of Ahirwan police station as Raju Mistri, who was arrested by police along with Kamal Valmiki, is missing.

Valmiki, 26, was arrested by the police in connection with a burglary case along with Mistri. Rekha, Valmiki's wife, on Thursday, went to the police station to meet him and discovered that Valmiki was dead. He was found hanging in the lock-up.

Valmiki's family has alleged that he died due to police brutality and torture. As news of Valimiki's death spread, violent protests erupted in his village and an angry mob pelted stones at policemen and attempted to set the police station on fire. The protesters also blocked traffic on National Highway 2 leading to a severe traffic jam. Police had to resort to tear-gas shelling to disperse the crowd and restore traffic movement
