Robert Joe Halderman, 52 pled gulty to attempted grand larceny on Tuesday. The former CBS producer had tried to blackmail David Letterman of the Late Night Show, regarding an affair the latter had.

TALK SHOW host David Letterman has finally been to end a difficult chapter of his life, after Robert Joe Halderman, a former CBS producer who had tried to blackmail him, regarding an affair he had with a staffer, pled guilty to attempted grand larceny charges.

Robert Joe Halderman, 52 pled gulty to attempted grand larceny on Tuesday and was sentenced to six months in prison. The producer has been saved from a very embarrassing trial, when he agreed to the plea bargin offered by the prosecution.

David Letterman who had an affair with a staffer of his late night show, had been asked to fork out $2 million by Robert Joe Halderman, so that he would remain mum on the affair. The comedian had straight away approached the police, leading to Halderman's arrest, when he tried to cash in a phony check given to him by the former. Instead of keeping the incident under wraps, David Letterman had on air confessed to his infidelity and discussed the blackmail attempt.

Before sentencing, Robert Joe Halderman said that he was remorseful for his actions. He confessed, "In September of 2009, I attempted to extort $2 million from David Letterman by threatening to disclose personal and private information about him, whether true or false.

David Letterman on Tuesday, praised prosecutors and said, "When they became involved with this case, I had complete faith that a just and appropriate result was inevitable. On behalf of my family, I am extremely grateful for their tireless efforts."

Meanwhile, David Letterman is back to reigning the charts with his Late Night Show, after Jay Leno reigned on the spot for a week. As per TV ratings, David Letterman on Monday beat the Tonight Show host, gaining more viewers than the latter in the 1-49 age group and 25-54 age group.
