New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick also appeared with David Patten at the news conference of his retirement announcement and thanked the receiver for his contributions to the team.
Patten said in a news conference that “I’m healthy, and I still feel like I want to walk away.” He also added, “I feel like it’s time. When you lose it mentally, you can’t play at this level.” Patten described his time with the Patriots, from 2001-2004, as the highlight of his career.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said, "This is a sad moment. I think David sets the pace in work ethic."
David Patten played for the New York Giants (1997-99), Browns (2000), Patriots (2001-2004), Washington Redskins (2005-2006) and New Orleans Saints (2007-2008).
David Patten best season came in 2002, when he had 61 catches for 824 yards and five touchdowns. Patten played 12 NFL seasons and finished with 324 receptions, 4,715 yards and 24 touchdowns.
