Dayanidhi Maran and his siblings along with Malaysia-based businessman T Ananda Krishnan were booked by the CBI for their role in the 2G spectrum scam. However, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has alleged that the move is just an 'eyewash'.
WHILE EVERYONE sits up and speculates whether will Dayanidhi Maran meet the fate similar to that of former tainted telecom minister A. Raja, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has gone on record stating that the CBI raids, which were conducted on Monday at Maran’s residences across Chennai, Hyderabad and New Delhi, are just an ‘eye wash’ to ‘cheat the public’.

However, she hoped that the Maran brothers are implicated for the crimes that they have done in the Aircel-Maxis deal, reported IANS. On Tuesday, the CBI pressed charges against the Maran brothers including media baron and the younger brother of Dayanidhi, Kalanithi Maran. The younger sibling Kalanithi is also the managing director of Sun TV. Situation grew grim for Dayanidhi as he, who was the then Telecom Minister was accused of getting kickbacks from the Malaysia based Maxis telecom soon after it bought Aircel for $800 million. During his tenure, he was said to have backed the deal as he saw high returns, which could be invested in his family business.
As the 2G spectrum case gains momentum, Dayanidhi could be the second telecom minister to go behind the bars, with the first one being A. Raja. This is also for the first time that foreign names are being included. An unnamed person told the Times of India that just before the deal was struck, T Ananda Krishnan had come to India several times and had meetings with Dayanidhi Maran at his office, and once the company was sold by Sivasankaran, Maxis was given licences following which Maxis bought shares worth Rs 547 crore in Sun Direct at premium rates, despite company (Sun) not having such kind of market reputation at that time.
