Deal averts New York's doorman strike: New updates
The possible New York doorman strike 2010 on Wednesday was called off after the doormen reached a deal with the NYC building owners.
The possible New York doorman strike 2010 on Wednesday was called off after the doormen reached a deal with the NYC building owners.

The New York doorman strike would have made the residents’ lives difficult as there would be nobody to hail visitors, safeguard the residents against strangers and clean up trash and do other odd jobs.

In an agreement on Wednesday, the building owners and doorman settled upon a four-year contract including a pay hike of near 10 per cent for the workers and no cuts in the benefits they are entitled to.

But for the agreement, the Nyc doorman strike wouldn’t have been averted.Nearly 30,000 doorman, porters, other building workers and handymen had threatened to strike if their wages hadn’t been raised and benefits were cut.

Building owners in New York City had said that workers must take a wage cut, considering the economic crisis. This gave way to the most threatened Doorman strike Nyc would have witnessed in about 20 years after way back in 1991 when the group staged a sit-in waiting for a better contract.

The Realty Advisory Board and the union representing the doorman had been negotiating on a better contract. Although the new deal provides for a higher pay, the days of vacation and sickness leaves the workers receive remain the same.
