Death dance continuing in Koraput district, tribals affected
The cholera and diarrheal deaths are now being reported from Malkangiri district in Orissa. The deaths particularly of tribal people are continuing for the past couple of months in remote tribal populated villages.
IT IS a matter of great concern that after Rayagada district, the deaths caused by cholera and diarrhea have now been reported from Malkangiri district in Orissa. Despite of several medical teams working from 8am to 5pm with a lunch break of about half an hour, the deaths particularly of tribal people are continuing for the past couple of months in remote tribal populated villages under Kalyansinghpur, Kashipur and Bisam Katak Blocks of Rayagada districts and Padia Block of Malkangiri district of Orissa.

According to the official source, the total number of cholera and diarrheal death is 73. The unofficial source put the death toll at one hundred and seventy in between July 15 to September 17, 2010. As many 2000 people provided treatment during the period. A visit to Kashipur, Kalyansinghpur and Bissam Katak reveals the pathetic condition of the tribals living in villages due to lack of communication facilities, medicare etc. People in remote villages particularly tribals are dying like insects. Kasipur area during August 1987, attracted the international media and the political leaders of various parties for its infamous starvation deaths. The then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and his wife Sonia Gandhi visited Kasipur on September 25, 1987, to look after the fate of the tribals who are then dying like flies.

The then prime minister after one year of his visit was forced to start an international agency for agriculture development project at Kasipur with an estimated cost of Rs 31 crores to look after all round developmental works at Kashipur Block within a time period of seven years. The main intention of the project was to prevent the starvation deaths. However, the very purpose of allotting funds for developmental works defeated. The money meant for the poor starving tribals has been siphoned by corrupt politicians, contractors and bureaucrats. It is quite strange the hospital at Kashipur is manned by a pharmacist without a doctor. The more number of on going deaths at Kashipur forced the government to bring a team of doctors on deputation from other hospitals and colleges to prevent the deaths.

The doctors working on deputation at Kashipur confirmed the deaths are continuing in remote villages for taking contaminated water and consumption of tribal traditional food (consumption of gruel made out of mango nuts and wiled roots to kill their hunger and drinking a contaminated water due to non availability of safe drinking water).

A veritable hell hole, the Kashipur hospital stinks with dirt and filth all over, rusting cots, walls white washed decades ago and blood stained cotton scattered all over. The premises evoke the picture of the hospital. Broken steel cots, the female ward is the worse of all. All these prove how the governments both at the Centre and state level are taking care of the tribals. The secretary of health department Anu Garg and Health Ministers Prasanna Acharya told that in a remote village under Bissam Katak Block, the steps have been taken to prevent the diarrheal and cholera deaths.

More number of doctors and pharmacists are being deputed from medical colleges and other hospitals to combat diarrhea out break under Rayagada district. While the deaths are continuing the political leaders are busy in organising meetings in support and against the industrialisation in Orissa. It is the fate of the tribals those who are living in the state of Orissa.
