Deepavali: Commemoration of inner illumination of purity and wisdom
If one goes by real spirit of Deepavali, it is meant to be the 'festival of lights' to illumine the inner space and expel the darkness of existential ignorance. However, over years, the festival of inner illumination has got distorted to become, cultural, ritualistic, commercial, sectarian and political festival.

Instead of remaining a festival of lights, it became a festival of sound and fury leading to internal and external pollutions. It seems, of late Deepavali has been high-jacked by demonic and vicious spirits, feel spiritualists.

Spiritualists hold that in reality, Deepavali is a holy festival meant to be observed with the 'absolute fire or light principle' for self-purification.

The preparation or readiness for spiritual reflection has to be simple like lighting thirteen wheat flour lamps with oil and cotton in them to be kept outside the house and hanging a lantern with a big earthen oil lamp at the main door to symbolise the activation of divine energy. It is said that the oil lamps and the lantern clean the atmosphere both physically and spiritually.

To give, the festive look to the event, rangoli of lotus, swastika and footprints as holy signs is done with rice or fine wheat flour to evoke mental energy level with serenity.

"Deepavali symbolises this conquest of Divine thoughts over evil tendencies. Today, unfortunately, Deepavali is celebrated just as a cultural festival, without an understanding of its spiritual context," says spiritualist PP Pande.

He adds, "However, if people learn, appreciate and understand about this spiritual context then all the ills in society; caused by spiritual ignorance, carnal and bad tendencies, would get reduced and even the dominance of immoral people over the pious masses will subside."

"Therefore, igniting the flame of one's soul with spiritual passion, by reducing all worldly attachments can be known as true Deepavali," he concludes.
