Deforestation: Major contributor to global warming
Food and Agriculture Organisation's study report mentions that world's forests and forest soil store more than one trillion tones of carbon-twice the amount found in the atmosphere.
AFTER ALL is said and done, global warming continues to be a menace yet to be tackled. Despite the serious threat of global warming, many of us still overlook the issue. We sloppily cut trees for making furniture, but we fail to remember that the trees sustain this universe.

Moreover, there are a lot of transgressions that cause global warming. With this picture in the background, United Nations’ declaration of 2011 as International Year of Forest is relevant. One of the significant facts is the time taken to evolve these forests. Secondly, how these forests keep ecosystem in the right place.

A forest is an ecosystem, which is a habitat of varied vegetation, animals and micro-organisms. Forest are one of the products of nature and they came into being after a long process which lasted thousands of years. So, only nature knows about its formation and has made its own rules. That is why, once it is smashed, it is impossible to restore.

Therefore, forests are a vital factor in sustainable development and provide umpteen number of products and are also the main source of livelihood for tribals. They regulate climate and maintain pollution. Forests are the solution for some of the environmental problems like soil erosion and floods etc.

Food and Agriculture Organisation’s study report mentions that world’s forests and forest soil store more than one trillion tones of carbon-twice the amount found in the atmosphere. As Rajendra Pachauri says, “The spread of knowledge and awareness would be critical driver of the transformation that is required to move human society towards a pattern of sustainable development.”

The forest conservation campaign should also be the most effective means of thwarting the efforts of skeptics and vested interests.
