Delhi has always been in the news for wrong reasons. With the recent incident on International Women's Day, the debate that looms large is, isn't this enough? When will safe environment for everybody become a reality? Self-help is the only solution.
WITH WOMEN being subject to eve teasing, molestation, harassment and sexual assault in the capital, women themselves need to be more alert and conscious of their surroundings.
Unlike other metropolitan cities, it is now acknowledged that the capital is not safe for women. Wherever a woman goes, she is under the constant threat of harassment and sexual assault. As per media reports, at least one woman is molested every day and 142 have already been raped in the capital in 2011. Despite assurances from the police to increase security for women in the city, nothing much has been done.
Delhi is a city where one can see security personnel around the city - almost in every corner - but none when one really needs it. So then what's the alternative? Even with the security personnel deployed in the area, crimes are committed. Despite deploying several security personnel in the city, the assailants or the accused manage to escape easily leaving the cops unable to crack the cause of the crimes in a short span of time. The solution is that women have to become more vigilant and learn to stave off attackers - especially in public places. Women cannot depend or rely on the security system fully. They themselves need to contribute to attain safety in the city. They need to maintain cordial relations with their parents, inform about their problems/abuses meted out to them, and also report any unusual happenings or incidents to the police.
