The Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee had induced austerity in marriages, by allowing Granthis to attend just those marriages which were conducted in the day, with simple meals, reasoning that rising marriage expenses cause female foeticide.
THE CHIEF Minister of Delhi Shiela Dixit, has rightly asked her ministers to avoid attending mega budgeted marriage ceremonies. Earlier, the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee had also induced austerity in marriages, by allowing Granthis to attend just those marriages which were conducted in the day, with simple meals. They reasoned that main cause for female foeticide is that increasing expenses in marriages of girls.
It is time that central government should also take measures to ensure marriages are held simply. This would ensure that the birth of a girl may be taken as boon rather than bane.
India should follow Pakistan by allowing only soft drinks and beverages in marriage related functions. Political consensus should be developed so that Shiela Dixit's statement may be nationally adopted, to compel elected representatives to boycott mega budgeted functions.
