Delhi fog brings flights, trains to standstill and disrupts road traffic
Dense fog engulfed Delhi NCR and parts of North India such as Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan earlier today. As a result of which there was huge disruption in air and road traffic and in due process, flights getting delayed and roads getting jammed were the order of the morning. The morning fog spread like a thick blanket across Delhi NCR region reducing the visibility to almost zero.

The poor visibility has greatly affected air traffic as operations at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi came to a standstill, causing delays, diversions and cancellations of flights. Around 60 to 80 domestic and international flights were delayed because of the fog today.

Not only the air traffic but the railways also got affected with around 16 trains getting rescheduled. Services to the north-eastern states were affected due to the dense fog. The railways has taken prior measures and announced the cancellation of certain trains to efficiently tackle the movement of trains during the foggy condition.

The road traffic was also affected due to the poor visibility. The traffic was moving very slowly in the wee hours on Tuesday morning. Ashish Kumar a resident of Palam (Delhi), who feels that driving on foggy days is a herculean task as the visibility is very low. “You need to drive slow and avoid overtaking other vehicles,” said Ashish.

Ashish also cautioned the public saying, “Low visibility is also one of the key reason of road accidents and hence one needs to take all precautions.” Divya Sharma, who travels daily from Delhi to Gurgaon, said “I got late to office due to the foggy day and huge traffic jam on the highway.”

Anuj Chauhan, a marketing professional needs to travel everyday, as his job demands him to. He faces difficulties during work on such foggy days, as he fails to attended meetings with his clients on time, due to poor visibility and heavy traffic.

The senior officials of Met department has said that the minimum temperature would be between 7 to 9 degree Celsius and the maximum temperature likely to remain between 20 to 23 degrees.
