Delhi gang rape: Rights body demands more powers to NCW

An Odisha-based rights organization has suggested Justice Usha Mehra commission, inquiring sensational Delhi gang rape case, to recommend more power to National Commission for Women (NCW).

THE INDIA Media Centre (IMC), which is also a petitioner before NHRC in Delhi gang rape case and police brutality on anti-rape rally at India Gate and Jantar Mantar, wrote to the Jusice Usha Mehera Inquiry Commission to act against the guilty officials.

Rights Activist Mr. Akhand on behalf of India Media Centre has submitted the petition before the Commission. He said: “Commission may visit the spot of incident, the particular bus, Safdarjung Hospital and concerned police station to collect details report of the incident and follow up action by the Government officials.”

Union Home Secretary, Delhi Police commissioner and Delhi Health Secretary should be asked to submit affidavit before the commission on the matter, he urged before the commission. The petitioner demands to act against the persons who have made adverse comments on the matter.

“Their statements should be collected from different media and they should be asked to file affidavit on their comments. After considering their affidavit Commission may suggest any action against them,” he prayed.

Again, he demanded NCW should be given more power so that they can act and punish the guilty public officials responsible for delaying action against culprits in such cases. The 23-year-old victim, who was gang raped and brutally assaulted on a moving bus in New Delhi, died at a Singapore hospital on December 29. Earlier, the last date for receiving such suggestions was January 10. But it has been extended until January 28.
