The other side of the story is that now that this was a high profile case, with all eyes glued to this character Ram Singh and his likes, the prison warden may have already written his resignation. That is how our country is. There will be a court of Inquest and an Inquiry, someone will be blamed, and someone will lose his job, for no fault of his. This is how our system works.
I would rather say, let us have an inquest for the sake of it. This man had to die and he helped us do it himself. None of the jail staff should be made accountable for such people reaching their very end, knowing full well what is in store for them. Let us for once, just leave the jail staff without mistrusting them.
The conditions of Tihar Jail are known, the overcrowding is seen, the delay in the judicial process is unacceptable to all, the lack of courts and judges is stale news, so let us all just close this chapter, and help the other convicts in this case and others to help us to do the same thing at the earliest. Or give them a time limit that 10 days from now, please hang yourself or else we shall hang you. Don’t send them to the gallows; just hang them by the thickest and biggest tree in Tihar. Mandoli prison will still take time to come up.
I would go further to suggest that there should be a suicide point in this prison, to give a fair chance to all such criminals, who out of sheer pressure need to just go and hang themselves. You may suggest a name for it. “Self Cleansing Point etc”. They should be provided with the best of ropes, best of everything, so that the process is irreversible once he takes the plunge. No more court, no more judge and jury. Justice shall be delivered in time every time. Many long pending court cases shall finish, the judiciary will be able to look into matters more serious and important, and concentrate on doing things good for the country.
I am convinced that these chaps are seasoned criminals. They know the due process of law, and they are aware of what happens in case of a custodial death. So therefore, the old adage is absolutely apt, “Hum to doobenge sanam, par tum ko bhi le dubenge” (I will drown my dear, but I’ll ensure that you drown too).
This guy has ensured that all those who were involved in his interrogation will face the music. An inquiry at the highest will be ordered, as I know now there will be activists who have a soft corner for the criminals and not the crime. Such people will talk about human right violations, pathetic conditions of prisons, third and fourth degree torture to get out confessions, prison reforms and so on. I know of such people.
I am also contemplating endless debates on all news channels, which will be a criminal waste of time. Now the parents of these convicts will be interviewed by the press. They will testify that their son was very close to being a saint. So much so for journalistic fairness/unfairness, or shall I say journalistic mirch-masalaness.
I think differently, and have radical views, may be to the dislikes of many, but that’s how I think. True justice has been delayed and justice has been denied for sure in this case. The common man surely will relate to my views that the case should be decided in a time-bound period, but is someone in the corridors of powers willing to listen? Will the news channels understand the feelings of the victims of such crimes, I wonder?
