FIVE LABOURERS were killed and as many as 15 others injured when an overbridge being constructed as part of the Delhi Metro collapsed in the early hours of Sunday (July 12). Out of the 15 injured, two of them were critical. This is the second such incident in the last eight months. Delhi Metro spokesperson, Anuj Dayal, said that five persons have died in this incident and 15 others were injured.

Officials said that the incident which took place near Lady Sriram College in Dhamrudpur in Lajpat Nagar at around 5 am, occured when a pillar suporting the bridge, collapsed. Delhi Metro attributed the accident to a fault in the design of the pillar. Dayal said that an investigation was on and that it was very likely that the design of the pillar may have led to the collapse of the overbridge. He said that everything was being done to rectify the problem.

It is believed that around 20 to 25 labourers were working on the site when the accident occurred. The collapse of the pillar also resulted in a broken water pipeline which caused minor flooding in the area. In October last year, a similar incident claimed the lives of two persons and injured 16 others, when a Metro overbridge collapsed and fell on a bus on Vikas Marg in the Lakshmi Nagar area of East Delhi.
