ON SUNDAY (November 22), Delhi police lathi-charged and lobbed tear gas shells on Jawaharlal Nehru University students. Eighteen students were seriously injured and four others were detained by the police. The issue was lame response by police towards the vandalism by four miscreants, who were teasing and abusing students and flashing firearms. Students were protesting against the lukewarm response by the Delhi police.
On Sunday afternoon, four persons in a car entered into the campus. They were drinking and passing lewd comments on girls. They also misbehaved with one of the girls in the campus. After complaints, the watchmen stopped them at the gate around 3.30 pm, when they were trying to escape.
Incidentally I was passing by and I found those goons fighting with the watchmen, pushing and abusing them. They also threaten of dire consequences as they said that they were related to some ‘commissioner’. A PCR of Delhi Police was parked on the side but policemen present there just watched the fight.
Seeing the helpless situation of the security guards, I asked the in-charge of security guards to do something at least for self protection. When the security guards retaliated and took action against those goons, another PCR came in with more constables.
Instead of tackling the goons the sub-inspector started yelling at me, as I asked the guards to click the alcohol and pistol found in their car. He used all possible filthy words and his power packed dialogues against me. I was surprised to see the protection given to the criminals and humiliation of the victims by Delhi police. I realised that I am all alone against those goons and the policemen. Those four goons were safely resting in police car with all protection. Later, other students came in and by the evening it was a big crowd. But, still the responsible police officers didn’t disclose the names of these miscreants.
Hoping for proper action by the police against the criminals, more and more students came in, but instead of solving the issue peacefully, Delhi police committed even bigger mistake. Students were attacked brutally with lathi and tear gas. The irresponsible move by Delhi police was a shocking incident.
This incident proved once again that police are for elite. Sticks are for victims…! Protectors of criminals, harassers of commoners. It just reminded me of recent Manu Sharma case. We students must feel pity for our Delhi police and ‘iron frame since British Raj’.
