THE CENTRE has received demands for the creation of at least 10 new states, including a separate Bundelkhand, Telangana, Harit Pradesh, Mithilanchal and Saurashtra. According to a Home Ministry official, the demands were mostly received from organisations like Bundelkhand Akikrit Party, Telengana Rashtra Samiti and the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) and some other organisations and individuals.
Bundelkhand Akikrit Party is demanding for a separate Bundelkhand state covering Mahoba, Banda, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Jalaun, Chitrakoot of UP and Chhatarpur, Sagar, Tikamgarh, Datia, Guna, Panna, Satna of MP, . Though none of the concerned state government have yet given any recommendation which is mandatory for carving out a new state, the demands continue to pour in.
A few years back, the TRS had placed its demand for creation of a Telengana state, comprising the Telengana region in Andhra Pradesh, while the GJM has been putting pressure to carve out a Gorkhaland state out of Darjeeling and adjoining areas in West Bengal.
Sanjay Pandey, convener of Bundelkhand Akikrit Party says that all the organisations which are making a demand for statehood should come together to pressurise the central government. He added that the day was not far when Bundelkhand would be granted statehood.
.Creattion of more new states will eventually lead to India's disintegration. Faced with the ill efects of regional chauvinism as it exists today, the Governement of India should first get into the root causes for such demands and remove them with equity and justice, instead of counting on the political gains or losses, and then pass a legislation to the effect that any demand for separate statehood from any quarters would be considered an anti -national act and punishable under National Security Act. The union ministry should deeply think about the oath taken by the MPs to preserve the unity and integrity of India and should not succumb to such pressure groups, at any cost.
